We realize that when people think of a winter getaway, Prince Edward Island probably isn't at the top of their list.....but maybe it should be.

Prince Edward Island can be just as beautiful blanketed in snow as it is when layered in green....on a cold clear morning with frost clinging to bare tree branches, the landscape takes on the texture of a painting.

And just because it's winter doesn't mean there's nothing to do.

We don't hibernate over here on the Island, we get out and enjoy all kinds of winter activities...and we want to share the good times with you.  Why not put a group of friends together and come on over.   We'll create a weekend experience (or midweek if you prefer) that will warm your heart on a cold winter's day.

All across Prince Edward Island, there's a secret ritual going on inside these tiny buildings dotting the bays and inlets...and now you can be initiated into the ancient art of smelt spearing.

That's right.  We fish using short spears..!

Smelt shacks aren't fancy but they're cozy.  And our fishermen will fascinate you with their tall tales of their years of fishing the elusive smelt.   $150.00 + tax (2-6 participants).  BOOK NOW

Love oysters?  Well, they fish for them in winter too...right through the ice right here on Salutation Cove.  In the summer, we take guests out in a dory....in the winter, you go out by snowmobile or ATV.

The fishermen use chain saws to cut through the ice and then tong for oysters on the bottom of the Cove.

They'll show you how to use the tongs so you can help with the harvest.....and even eat a few right out of the water.  They don't get any fresher than that!

And when you get back to the grading plant, you'll get to try your hand at spray cleaning your catch and learn the difference between standards and choice....how to tell the freshness and most importantly....how to shuck.  All the while listening to Brian Lewis and Ted Boutilier talk passionately about their fondness for this marvellous shellfish.  Oh....of course, you'll get to eat some more oysters! And even bring a few back to Briarcliffe to have with your gourmet dinner.   $85.00/pp + tax  (2-6 participants)

Or how about a snowshoe trek in the woods with our winter survival guide, Dennis Hopping.  It can be a nice leisurely walk or something a bit more strenuous....whatever you're up to.   You'll start out at Dennis' beautiful home on the shore of Malpeque Bay with instruction on how to strap on your snowshoes and most importantly, how to walk on them.  Once you're ready, Dennis will lead you off down by the shore then across open fields into the woods.  Along the way, Dennis will show you some simple winter survival techniques.....how to find dry tinder....start a fire without matches and brew up a little tea or hot chocolate.  You'll find Dennis is quite the story teller....ask about his experiences as a military search and rescue officer.   $75.00/pp + tax (2-6 participants)      BOOK NOW

If you're really adventurous, ask about our overnight winter experience where you'll learn how to build a lean-to, stay warm and dry....and cook your own meal.  $150.00/pp + GST (2-6 participants)
