Back Road Folk Art
Artist Within

The first hint that you've arrived somewhere special is the brightly painted red workshop with the ornate gingerbread trim. Then you see the colourful lobster buoys hanging from the tree and the world's biggest eggbeater....(honestly, it's in the Guiness Book of Records!) Back Road Folk Art is like no other place on Prince Edward Island....and the artist you are about to meet is definitely like no one else you've ever met. To call Kerras Jeffery unique would be an understatement and to call his folk art studio eclectic would be a disservice. He has a style that is definitely his own and an imagination that seems to know no bounds. Where you may see a wooden float for a fishing net, he sees a sheep. An old wrench is a fish tail. A milking pail becomes a cow and horseshoes magically become...a horse!
Kerras lives on the same land in western Prince Edward Prince Island that his great-great grandfather settled back in the early 1800's and he's built a small museum next to his studio to honour his ancestors and the history of the region and as part of your day with Kerras, you'll get a personal guided tour filled with fascinating stories about the Jeffrey family and the early days of West Prince. But it will be the time you spend with Kerras in his workshop that will make this experience truly amazing. He'll show you how to work with wood to create your own version of his popular wrench-tail fish. By following his step-by-step process, you'll have your block of wood looking like a fish in no time at all. Then comes the surprise. Kerras will take you up into the attic where you'll explore shelf after shelf of fascinating stuff he has accumulated over years of scavenging yard sales and local auctions. You'll rummage through his box of old metal tools to find just the right wrench to become the tail of your fish. Kerras will help you cut the end off and attach it to the end of your fish....then you get to paint it whatever colour you want. When you're finished, you'll leave with a unique momento of your Island visit and lifelong memories.
