Handmade Paper from Sea to Shore.....
Papermaking is a craft whose ancient technique was invented almost 2000 years ago in China. The process was passed from culture to culture along the Great Silk Road, finally making it to Spain and Italy in 1100 AD. The first paper mill in North America was built in 1690....a surprisingly recent development.
While the process of mass producting paper has been refined and industrialized, making paper by hand is still guided by the ancient methods of gathering natural fibres, cooking, mashing, pressing and drying to create unique and beautiful works of art.
We will make our papers from natural fibres collected right here on PEI, including seaweed, eel grass and the long sender leaves from Japanese Iris, Day lilies and corn husks. Participants are encouraged to bring interesting inclusions such as collected leaves, ferns, flower petals even sprinkles of sand or seeds.
Linda McCausland will guide you through the creative and tactile process of papermaking and you will leave at day's end with a collection of papers made from the very island itself....a truly unique Island experience.
Lunch is included in the workshop fee and throughout the day there will be coffe, tea and fresh baked goodies.
Fee: $96/pp + GST Minimum 4 - Maximum 8 Available: Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:00-4:00 Location: Point Prim (half hour east of Charlottetown)
